How were you motivated to become a sculptor and painter? |
|
When living in New York, I heard a great deal about the brutal treatment
of our brothers because of the color of their skin. I had been a
painter, but trying to make statements of protest against those inhuman
acts, I had to turn to sculpture. By pounding on wood and stone, I was
better able to get release from my anger.

What can you share about your creative process? |
|
|
|
My inspiration comes from the combination of my emotional state, my
experiences in my environment, and what my psyche does with these
elements. For example,
I have a dream. It is about a body of water I had seen on my early
morning walk. I wake up and decide that I had never thought about
reflections in my art. I must do something about it. In a body of
water, the sky and the clouds are reflected. I must do something like
that. I build a light angleiron structure, a rectangle. I put a cover
over the top. Under the cover, I paint a cloudlike painting. About a
foot or two below that, I put a mirror. This reflects my painting. I
do a series. I then use transparent polyester resin to create a
transparent sculpture.
Another idea ...
The wind devils in my area delight me. I make a model in metal, one
inch to a foot. I then, with the assistance of a wonderful Taos Pueblo
welder Lupe Romero create the large sculpture Flight of the Wind
(see second photo).

What ideas do you have for a future human community on Mars?
|
|
We humans on planet Earth have always known that there was a "man" on
Mars. But we always thought he was hostile, unfriendly. But on our
pilot trip to Mars we discovered a whole community of very friendly
people or things we call "people"! We had suspected for a long time
that they are a much older planet than our planet Earth. Also wiser.
They are way ahead of us in the Sciences. But what is most important,
there is no war, no greed, and above all, no violence! Children will
love it on Mars because there is very little gravity. Children could
fly with the birds. To live in a peaceful community, like Mars, will
indeed be a unique experience.
