How were you originally motivated to become a sculptor?
I've wanted to be an artist since my childhood. I saw a sculpture exhibition with an elementary school group. At nine years old, this influenced me tremendously. I've always had a desire to be a productive person. As I've grown older, I've seen that the world needs constructive, creative people willing to bend rules just enough to create positive and interesting change. I see that artists can be such individuals when their sights are turned toward social institutions. Art isn't just about making things, it's about developing ideas which can inspire beyond mere aesthetics.   Click for larger image

What can you share about your creative process?
As an adult, I realize that the most important thing is to do something which always presents interesting challenges. With my limited resources, I've always had to figure out ways of being creative that are within my means. My limits become assets as I am determined to follow through with my ideas with what is available.

I read a lot of science journals on theoretical physics, molecular biology, and abstract mathematics. I have friends who exist as successful members of these fields. I seek examples of how thinking outside of my direct discipline can inform and inspire ideas in my own pursuit. I spend a great deal of my time writing grant proposals for funding my art. In each proposal I must explain another specialized area of my work to a new group of possible supporters. I have to use my creative process to survive and continue conceiving my ideas.

What ideas do you have for a future human community on Mars?
Those who go to Mars will have to learn to not waste anything. Limited supplies will be brought from Earth or created on Mars. They will have to solve the problem of waste, which is something people at large do not have to consider in everyday Earth life.

The fact that Mars is so far away from the influence of Earth will hopefully inspire people to develop new forms of decision making and Democracy. The traditions of Justice and Government will go to Mars, but it is up to the new colonists of Mars to revolutionize and evolve Democracy as much as we have here in America, but on their own terms with their own considerations.
